Southport is where I went to learn to paddle in rough water, current, and wind. I spent two winters driving down every three weeks or so for a three to four day session with Brian Stevens, ACA L5 Advanced Open Water Instructor.
It is a dynamic environment, constantly changing. It is no exaggeration to say it taught me everything I know about reading water, judging wind, and handling current.
This last weekend I took a student down there. With high winds we were limited in what we could do, and yet the location did not disappoint. There is so much water there, and the current and tide are always blasting through, that we had no trouble finding something to play in.
After we sent our student off for home we went to scope out an inlet we hadn't paddled before. A twenty minute drive from Southport, this inlet promises to be the location of many epic surfing adventures. More to come on that, for sure!
