I carry these because I literally carry these, in my boat. I can be accused of leaving lots of stuff on shore, but my paddle float is not one of them. Useful for so many situations besides a self rescue. ***One time my expedition partner forgot his sleeping pad. Guess what he slept on for that whole trip?
 
I also use these to:
--stabilize loads in my hatches, so the loads don't shift, and heavy items don't damage my bulkheads. 
--under Reed Spare Hatch Covers, to stabilize the cover in case of waves breaking over the deck.
--sitting on at lunch so I'm not covered in sand.
